Rose CARROLL was my grandmother. She married Henry GOETSCH, Jr. on September 14, 1916 in Miles City, MT. Rose and Henry had three children: Anna, James Donald and my father, Elmer Eugene. Rose's mother was Anna KANE and her father was Joseph CARROLL. Like me, Rose was the 4th child born of 10. She was born Creighton, Nebraska on August 24, 1886. In 1915 she moved to Ekalaka, MT and took up a homestead, pictured below. Rose passed in 1967 in Huntington Beach, CA.

My Great grandparents, Joe and Anna (Kane) CARROLL, lived in Creighton, NE and had ten children. They are:

  • Charles b. Jan 1882
  • Bessie b. June 1883, married to Ben REESE (Read more about Bessie's school teaching, here.)
  • Genevieve (Jenny) b. 1885, married to Charles W. NIES
  • Rose b. Aug 1886, married to Henry GOETSCH
  • William b. May 1888
  • Joseph b. May 1893
  • George b. July 1897
  • Vincent b. Oct 1899
  • Jerry b. 1903, married to Stella
  • Edmond b. Aug 1906, married to Mary Jo

Joseph Sr's father, William Jr. CARROLL, immigrated from IRL to PA on 22 Jan 1848, aboard the "Finland." Joseph moved to NE to ranch and farm in 1877 and owned property in NE, OK and MT. Joseph's grandson, Lloyd, and great grandson, Llane, still ranch the MT land today. To read a biography written about Joseph CARROLL in 1912, please click on his name.

I have such wonderful memories of my grandma Rose. I remember her sending me out to the chicken coup to collect eggs for her angel food cake which she, of course, whipped by hand. It was her special Easter cake. I would carefully help her place the yellow and pink marshmallow bunnies around the top. She would always give me the extra one to eat on my walk home. Holidays were very special to her; lots of family, lots of food. The turkey and ham would be baking while we all went to church. She would bring out her Franciscan Ivy patterned dishes for the special event and set out a vase of freshly cut hydrangea from her garden.
